Jolly Back Chair Summary

What is The Jolly Back Chair?

The Jolly Back™ chair (UK patent pending) has been ergonomically designed to provide a practical, comfortable solution for adults who work with young children. Adults are required to communicate with and assist children at their low height, but unfortunately this compromises the health of the adult's spine, as repeatedly poor postures are adopted. The Jolly Back chair helps to reduce the risk of adults acquiring back pain.

How has the Jolly Back chair been developed?

The development of the Jolly Back chair is the result of months of direct consultation with front-line education staff and risk assessment, combined with a research-based professional knowledge of human anatomy and movement. Current health and safety legislation and guidance have also been considered. In particular, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992: regulation 11, BSEN1729 (parts1 and 2), HSE – seating at work 2002 and NUT Health and Safety Briefing – Seating, Posture and Ergonomic: A Teacher's Guide to Good Practice 2006".

Detailed Description of the Jolly Back Chair

The JollyBack Chair is available in 3 heights. All fabric is waterproof and breathable - this allows spills to be mopped up quickly with the chair remaining in use and importantly, it is a pleasure to sit on! The chair is made entirely within the UK using processes to minimise its carbon footprint. It has a static weight limit of 16 stones.

The Dimensions of the Jolly Back Chair enable users to:

  • Move close to and often position their legs under low children's tables to prevent bending/reaching over when assisting and communicating with children at their level (e.g. reading, baking, supervising snack/lunchtimes etc);
  • Stretch out their legs whilst maintaining thigh support;
  • Position their feet flat on the floor to allow safe, controlled manoeuvrability between tables/individuals when seated.
  • Promote natural spine posture by being able to have feet flat on the floor.
  • Sit more comfortably with support provided by a seat base wider than a child's chair.
  • Compact size enables close access (to tables and children) and practical use within the limited educational space.
  • Use also prevents children straining their necks by looking too high up.

The Wedge enables users to:

  • Improve their posture due to the increased angle between the thigh and the body (ideally allowing the user to get their knees lower than their hips when sitting). Based on natural anatomy and research studies, the damaging loads on the lower spine and hip joints, caused by incorrect flexed/crouched sitting, are reduced;
  • Effectively have an increased height of chair at the back, but still have the possibility of sufficient room to position their legs under low tables;
  • Maintain an upright spine more easily to allow improved respiratory function and ensure less abdominal compression (allows better breathing and digestion). A more relaxed upright posture will also reduce neck and shoulder pain as the head will also be naturally more upright with hands free to use.
  • Reduce the pressure under their thighs. This will allow increased blood flow to and from the legs;
  • Prevent bruising sometimes experienced when sitting down quickly on low un-padded furniture;
  • Experience an increased sense of well-being and function through improved postural alignment and body function.

The Height Adjustable Back Support and Handle enable users to:

  • Sit more comfortably and maintain relaxed, natural spinal alignment more easily when sitting;
  • Easily adjust the back support for different individuals if necessary;
  • Easily manoeuvre the chair around without having to bend over to move and position it;
  • The stability of the chair is also enhanced.

The Chair Base and castors enable users to:

  • Allow safe, effective maneuverability between tables/individuals within in the setting (Indoors and out);
  • Reduce twisting of their spine (associated with sitting on a static chairs) as the chair is mobile;
  • Improve their interaction with children at a low level by being able to easily move between those requiring assistance;
  • Limit the risk of knee injury (from twisting knees) and improve control as the floor beneath the seat base will be unobstructed by the chair's legs;
  • Lock the chair when not in use to ensure safety of the children within the setting;
  • Prevent lifting of the chair by being able to safely move it to wherever it is required;
  • Easily put breaks on and off when sitting on the chair or when standing.
  • Unobstructed floor space (i.e. instead of 5 star office base) reduces the trip hazard for users and children.
